The Caltech Experimental HEP homepage is located in the local /WWW/ directory. All of the other CITHEP pages of general interest, as well as the CITHEP banner and logo, are in that directory as well. There will be NO group pages or group-supported documents in that directory.

We are not providing any guidance on how groups format their pages, or what information should or should not be provided. Groups should attempt to avoid duplicating information that is already available on the CITHEP homepage, however. This document describes the directory organization and naming conventions for the CITHEP WWW area and for all groups' top-level pages. A guide to common files is also provided.

Directories

Under /WWW/, there will be a symbolic link for each experimental group, pointing to that group's WWW document directory. We recommend that each group create a directory on their group data disk named WWW/, or a symbolic link with that name to some other directory, under which all WWW documents will be kept. For example, the BES experiment will have a symbolic link /WWW/bes@ -> /bes/WWW, MACRO will have /WWW/macro@ -> /macro/WWW, and so on.

The only exception to this rule will be for experimental groups which do not have separate group disks, such as the B Factory. In that case, a symbolic link with an appropriate name will be created under /WWW/, pointing to a designated area on some other group's disk.

Homepage Hyperlinks

The CITHEP homepage will contain hyperlinks to each group's page. The group page must be named <group>.html, and must reside the group's top level WWW directory. The hyperlinks will be made relative to the directory containing the CITHEP homepage. Thus:

<A HREF="bes/bes.html>" BES Experiment </A>
<A HREF="macro/macro.html>" MACRO Experiment </A>
<A HREF="l3/l3.html>" L3 Experiment </A>

and so on.

Group Pages and Links

Each group is responsible for developing and maintaining their own WWW pages and supporting documents (text, images, sound, whatever). We recommend that wherever possible groups make hyperlinks relative to the document, and not absolute. When linking to images or other documents which are not maintained in the /<group>/WWW/ directory, a symbolic link should be created within that directory, instead of using a URL pointing outside it.

The reason for this is security, and future upgrades. If we acquire additional disk space in the future, and the CITHEP WWW home directory moves to some other location, none of the documents will need to be modified. If a security system is implemented, wherein URL filename references are prepended with a specific top-level directory (similar to the method by which anonymous FTP has its own prviate definition of `/'), the relative file specifications will continue to be valid, while absolute paths might not be.

At the bottom of each group page, the person who maintains the page should list their e-mail address, or a group-forwarding address. This will allow outside users to contact a group representative directly, rather than going through either the Caltech or CITHEP WWW managers. Locally, it will allow the CITHEP WWW manager to contact the people responsible for WWW within each group more easily.

Standard Documents, Images

The CITHEP homepage should always be referenced with a node-only URL, http://www.cithep.caltech.edu/. Please do not point to the specific document name cithep.html, since that may change in the future.

The CITHEP homepage ``banner'', a GIF containing the old HEP bear logo and the Address of CITHEP, is named cithep_head.gif. Groups can include it in their documents with the HTML markup

<IMG SRC="images/cithep_head.gif">.

The bear logo alone, at 70% the size it appears in the banner, is available with the name small_bear.gif. It should be referenced in the same way, using the absolute URL of the CITHEP server.

Caltech itself provides official versions of the Caltech ``torch'' logo, in three sizes, on the page http://www.caltech.edu/www/logoinfo.html. The largest, http://www.caltech.edu/pictures/citlogo.gif, is 220 pixels square, the next, smallcitlogo.gif is 132 pixels square, and the smallest, tinycitlogo.gif, is 79x80 pixels.
